Pump systems sized to the well

Sized to measured yield, not to the number of bathrooms.

A well pump is installed by a registered well pump installer, and every permanent installation requires a backflow prevention device under the Groundwater Protection Regulation. Sizing follows measured yield rather than household demand — a median near 3 US gallons a minute at Errington, and closer to 2 at Cedar and Yellow Point.

Most pump problems are sizing problems wearing a disguise. A pump matched to how much water a family wants, rather than how much the formation will give, runs dry, cycles, and burns out — and the well gets blamed for it.

A pump system is priced on depth, yield and whether storage and treatment are part of it. A shallow high-yield well in sand and gravel and a 60 m bedrock well giving 3 gallons a minute are not the same job, even in the same road.

The well sets the pump, not the house

A formation giving 2 to 3 gallons a minute cannot be made to give more by fitting a larger pump. What it can do is fill storage steadily through the day, so peak demand comes out of a tank rather than out of the aquifer. That is the design decision on most low-yield wells in this region, and it is made from a measured yield figure rather than an assumption.

What the regulation requires

A well pump must be installed so the casing is not damaged or moved, with a liner where the well is unstable, and so nothing foreign can enter the well. A backflow prevention device is required on a permanent well pump installation. Installing, repairing, removing or testing a well pump is restricted work under the Groundwater Protection Regulation.

The wellhead is part of the system

A pump is only as protected as the wellhead above it. A cap that no longer seals, casing sitting flush with the ground, or a missing surface seal all put surface water into the well the pump then delivers. The Regional District of Nanaimo rebates that work — up to $650 per wellhead, including $200 toward casing stick-up and $300 toward a surface seal.

Low-yield wells change the pump

Low yield is the normal condition here, not the exception. Aquifer 220 at Errington is rated low productivity with a median yield of 3 US gallons a minute; the lower quartile is 1. Aquifer 162 at Cedar and Yellow Point sits near 2. Gabriola Island runs about 4.5. Those are the numbers a pump gets designed against — and in June 2026 the Regional District of Nanaimo reported 16 of its 22 monitored aquifers below normal going into summer, which is when the design margin gets tested.

In practice

Situation
A Cedar property whose pump had been replaced twice in four years.
Complication
The well gave close to 2 gallons a minute; the pump had been sized to the house, and was drawing the well down and cycling every summer.
Resolution
A smaller pump feeding a storage tank, with the draw rate set below the measured yield. The well stopped being the problem because it stopped being asked to be the tank.

Can a bigger pump get more water out of a well?

No. A pump moves what the formation gives. A larger pump on a low-yield well draws the water level down faster, runs dry sooner and shortens its own life. Storage is the answer to low yield, not horsepower.

Who is allowed to install a well pump?

Is a backflow preventer actually required?
