Parksville sits over unconsolidated sand and gravel aquifers, mainly the Quadra Sand and associated Pleistocene outwash, rather than the fractured bedrock that dominates Cedar, Nanoose Bay and Gabriola Island. Median yields in comparable Quadra Sand deposits run many times higher than the 2–3 US gallons a minute typical of nearby bedrock, and depth to water can be shallow enough that some wells flow without pumping.

Flowing artesian conditions

Flowing artesian wells have been recorded in the sand and gravel along the lower slope east of Parksville, where confined conditions and enough topographic drive push water above ground level. Artesian flow is not free water — under the Groundwater Protection Regulation it must be controlled, the well must be built to prevent backflow, and the control equipment must be maintained. A driller who stops or controls that flow needs demonstrated competency in doing it.

What the water carries

Sand and gravel aquifers in this part of the island commonly produce water with elevated iron and manganese, and hardness is typical. The unconfined nature of many deposits also makes them vulnerable to surface influence, so setback, sealing and wellhead protection matter as much here as on bedrock. Water quality should be tested at commissioning and on an ongoing schedule, and any treatment system should be sized for the actual yield rather than a theoretical maximum.
